River Center – Butler County MetroParks, Ohio

Project Description

SMP design and our consultant engineers, teamed with Turnbull-Wahlert Construction for the design-build delivery of a multi-purpose park pavilion facility on the Great Miami River near Middletown, Ohio. With the emphasis on education and recreation, this project will become a stopping point on an established network of cycling/ pedestrian pathways along the river. The facility will embody the principles of water conservation & preservation of a Riverine ecology, with built-form and site strategies providing clear examples of conservation & sustainability. One example, is the collection of roof-water & parking lot water & the revealing of it’s path to ultimately end up in the central Rain-Garden that is surrounded by parking. The pavilion is designed to serve as a place of respite for cyclist/ pedestrians/ runners with access to restrooms, seating, and shade. It also provides an indoor space for educational purposes, supported by an Education Office. A conference venue, with serene river views, spills out onto a patio area & is likely to be a popular meeting & reception venue. Our design team has allowed for a future Phase 2 addition, which is seen in some of the rendering images.
